Where there is an existing cellar or basement that has not yet been converted into a habitable space, they can sometimes feel very damp and cold; this can be regardless of whether a house is old or a new build.  There are a couple of reasons as to why this happens:

• One of the main causes of damp is due to surface water on the exterior of the house.  When ground outside a property becomes saturated it can often make its way down into the basement.
• The second biggest problem in unconverted basements in condensation.  This is normally due to the lack of insulation and ventilation, which means that condensation occurs when air from the rest of the home comes into contact with this area.

How do Delta systems work to waterproof my basement?

When you appoint Simply Basement to carry out your basement conversion, we will use a combination of delta membrane systems as well as sump pumps to ensure that your new space remains free from damp and moisture.  The waterproof membranes are installed onto the walls and floors, creating a cavity of air which allows any water or moisture to be drained away via a sump or pump.  More information is available here on the Delta membrane website.

Do I need a specialist basement contractor?

It is important to appoint a qualified, specialist basement contractor to waterproof your cellar or basement as they will have been trained on how to install the delta membrane systems.  A good contractor will also provide you with a warranty against the delta membrane systems so you can have extra peace of mind once your basement conversion has been completed.
