The intensive phase of structural work can make having a basement conversion seem like a daunting prospect. Our aim at Simply Basement is to demystify the structural process as much as possible, so that you understand exactly what’s involved, hopefully making it a much less intimidating proposition.
Construction on your London basement conversion can begin once planning permission has been granted, structural calculations have been completed and all party wall notices are in place. After this, the first step is to secure the site with hoarding and ensure it’s weatherproof, and meets all health and safety requirements.
Once this process is complete, we begin the excavation of your cellar conversion and, as we do this, we check that all underpinning has been secured. The soil is dug out and we make sure it is disposed of following all of the correct procedures. Structural steel beams are then installed to support the property above.
A concrete basement floor is the next thing to be laid, with sump and pump drainage systems installed in order to make your basement waterproof and ensure it stays damp-free, as does a Delta membrane system, which we also install at this point. The sump and pump system draws water away from your basement, sending it where it will no longer pose a damp or flooding risk. The Delta membranes, meanwhile keep water away from your walls, floor and ceiling – the same product used to keep historic buildings and even the Channel Tunnel dry.
Next, it’s time for any light wells or windows to be installed to your specifications, and the walls, ceilings and floors are insulated to keep your basement conversion warm and energy efficient.
After this final part of the structural phase, the site is ready for our Simply Basement fit-out team to start turning it into a liveable space.
