We recently completed one of our most ambitious projects – a basement conversion in a mews house in Notting Hill. Mews houses are not known for their easy site access nor for being large properties. However, by adding an extra subterranean floor, the property owners have created a large open plan space with a statement kitchen, lounge area, indoor garden and an extra bathroom.

The ground floor has also been reconfigured to include a large open plan living room with a wood burning stove and exposed brick wall. Floor to ceiling style bi-folding doors flood the room with light and opens out into the small yard, where a reinforced glass floor has been installed to let in light to the basement room.

The basement kitchen is contemporary in style with a monochrome colour palette. The bright white island, set to one side gives the room length and divides the kitchen area from the dining space. The owners of this beautiful mews house have zoned the dining area with a simple woven carpet. The lounge area is tucked away in a nook next to the bathroom.

One of the most unique design features of this build is the light well that has created a small but tranquil indoor garden. Through the matching floor to ceiling bi-folding doors, the space is flooded with natural light that is covered with a glass light well made of reinforced glass that can be walked upon above.

In this bijou space, the owners have used silver planters to help bounce light, making the garden appear bigger and they have utilised the concept of vertical gardening, which gives the space height. The inclusion of this light well gives what would otherwise be a dark space much-needed natural light. By creating this space the owners have an area that brings the outdoors in – a rare luxury in a city where space is at a premium.
